What Is the Business Model Canvas?

The Business Model Canvas, created by Alexander Osterwalder, is a strategic management tool that lets you describe, design, challenge, and pivot your business model. It condenses the essential elements of a business into 9 interconnected building blocks on a single page.

The 9 Building Blocks

Key Partners — who helps you. Key Activities — what you do. Key Resources — what you need. Value Propositions — what you offer. Customer Relationships — how you interact. Channels — how you deliver. Customer Segments — who you serve. Cost Structure — what you spend. Revenue Streams — how you earn.

When to Use It

Use the Business Model Canvas when starting a new venture, evaluating an existing business, planning a pivot, or comparing different business models. It's used by startups and Fortune 500 companies alike to create a shared language around strategy.

Making Connections

The real power of the canvas is in how the blocks connect. Your Value Proposition should directly address your Customer Segments' needs. Your Key Activities and Resources should support your Value Proposition. Revenue Streams flow from value delivered, and Costs arise from activities and resources.

Pro Tip

Create multiple canvases for different scenarios or versions of your business model. Compare them side by side to identify which model has the strongest value proposition and most sustainable economics.
