What Is Ikigai?
Ikigai is a Japanese concept meaning "reason for being." It represents the intersection of four fundamental questions about your life and career. When you find something that satisfies all four, you've found your Ikigai — a source of deep fulfillment and purpose.
The Four Circles
What you love (passion and joy), what you're good at (skills and talents), what the world needs (contribution and impact), and what you can be paid for (livelihood and value). Each overlap between two circles reveals something meaningful — passion, profession, vocation, or mission.
How to Find Overlaps
The key is to use the same wording when an item genuinely belongs in multiple circles. For example, if "Teaching" appears in both "What You Love" and "What You're Good At," it's a Passion. If it also appears in "What The World Needs" and "What You Can Be Paid For," it's your Ikigai.
